DOGMAN Education
DOGMAN Philosophy
Improving the Canine Human Relationship is my goal. This goal dictates every interaction I have with dogs and the way that I educate people how to teach their dogs. I believe our relationship with our dogs must be a cooperative interaction built on trust and true understanding of the individual dog.
UNDERSTANDING
We must have a true understanding of our dogs to have solid relationship or modify their behaviors. I consider myself an educator more than a trainer. I want to share with you how to understand your dog as completely as possible; how it sees the world, how it communicates, how it reacts, how it views your every move. Every dog is a unique individual. I believe we must understand that individual then adapt a teaching program based on the dog’s individual strengths and weaknesses.
TRUST
We must establish a relationship built on trust with our dogs. Trust is earned not coerced. With a true understanding of your dog and daily thoughtful interactions with them trust can grow. I teach how to appropriately approach, hold, touch, feed, and reward your dog so that your relationship can deepen and move forward in a trusting way. We must be aware of how some of our actions can violate that trust and erode our relationship with our dog.
COOPERATION
I always ask my dogs for the desired behaviors, first. This is teaching. I use positive reinforcement to teach the dogs our interaction can be fun and rewarding. Food, toys, balls, tugs and our social interaction are all rewards we can use to keep our dog attention and motivation. Through management techniques we prohibit the behaviors we do not desire. Once the dog has established fluency in the behaviors we can use the leash and collar to further prohibit and interfere with the undesired behaviors.
